The American Widgeon is native to much of North America, with some ducks wintering
in Central and even northern South America.
The drake in breeding plumage has a metallic green eye patch and white crown; the duck has dark brown upperparts, chestnut midriff and white wing flash;
both have a white undercarriage
The drake gradually looses his green metallic eye stripe once the breeding season is over
The female has a less-speckled head and no eye stripe
Closely related to the Eurasian and Chiloe Widgeons and to the Falcated Duck/Teal.
