The Brown Teal, also called the New Zealand Teal, is endemic to New Zealand and is the rarest mainland duck.
The Brown Teal drake has a red-pink chest, a shiny green triangular head patch and a black rear.
The Brown Teal female is similar to other female teals, inconspicuous.
Despite some recent conservation breeding and reintroduction, the species remains threatened,
populations decimated from previous ranges formerly from hunting and more recently from invasive predators
eating eggs, ducklings and adult ducks.
