The male Red-crested Pochard in breeding plumage is a striking-looking drake,
particularly when he raises his red crest.
This handsome diving duck is native mainly to Southern Europe and Asia. Some winter in
the UK and there are small breeding populations in southern England (originally escapees).
His bright red eyes match his scarlet bill.
In some light he has a metallic green sheen on his black rump.
When courting, he dives for aquatic plants to feed the female.
Hobbies include diving . . .
conducting . . .
. . . and flying
. . . and synchronised grooming (with Wigeon above).
Adult male
Female - black bill with horn-coloured tip
The female Red-crested Pochard, as most female ducks, is much plainer.
She has one dress for all seasons, distinctive white cheeks, brown eyes and a black bill tipped with pink lipstick.
The drake looks quite untidy during transition to eclipse plumage.
His eclipse (non-breeding) plumage looks similar to the female, but the fully red bill and red eyes are a giveaway.
