The Brazilian Merganser is native to a few remaining pockets of Brazil (and probably no longer in Argentina or Paraguay).
It is critically endangered by deforestation, habitat loss, pollution and disturbance. There are estimated to be less than
250 birds remaining and direct hunting is also a threat.
Male and female have similar plumage including an iridescent green head with a long crest. As sawbills,
they have a narrow bill with a teethlike saw edge for grasping fish and molluscs.
