Domesticated geese were brought to UK by the Romans for food and guard duty.
These above, with white plumage, blue eyes, orange beaks and heavy keels, are Embden geese.
Embden geese are among the taller of northern European domestic geese at about a metre in height.
They lay about 10-12 eggs per year but are bred mainly for meat.
Most domesticated geese are descended from the wild Greylag Geese.
Greylag Geese ancestry is clear in the heavy Toulouse Geese, first bred by the French for "foie gras" and meat (like the Rouen duck).
