Thanks to hybrid duck expert Joern Lehmhus for
identifying the other parent of this hybrid Wood Duck as a Red-crested Pochard. There were Common and Red-crested Pochards on the ponds
where these hybrids live with a collection of various other captive and wild ducks.
Two of the four hybrids were darker, especially on the chest and back.
One of the Wood Ducks above with the 4th hybrid is likely to be (one of) the parent(s).
While handsome, the hybrids are not as handsome as either the Wood Duck
or the Red-crested Pochard parent.
This small half-white duck with a small bill lives on a pond with a few Mallards/Indian Runners.
Hybrid duck expert Joern Lehmhus suggests that it is likely to be a Wood Duck/Call Duck hybrid.
(The bill looks similar to the above and to that of Wood Duck.)
