The Greater Roadrunner is a ground cuckoo native to southwestern US and Mexico. Its cousin the Lesser Roadrunner lives in southern Mexico and Central America.
The Roadrunner can fly but usually runs, especially along roads, and can run at some 25 miles/hour.
Although in the cuckoo family, it makes its own nest and rears its own chicks.
The Roadrunner has iridescent brown plumage streaked with light cream, a light underside, a crest of dark feathers, bare skin behind the eye and a long tail.
