Socorro Dove Zenaida graysoni

The Socorro Dove has been extinct in the wild since 1972. It used to live on Socorro Island in the Pacific off Mexico. A captive breeding programme is underway to ensure its survival.

Male and female have similar plumage. One of the key reasons for the Socorro's extinction on its native island was the introduction of cats (of which it had little fear).

The Socorro Dove is related to the similar-looking but less rufous Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) of North America of which it used to be thought a subspecies but it has several differences.
