The Eurasian 3-toed Woodpecker is native to coniferous forests across Eurasia, mainly in northern areas but also in the Alps, Carpathians, Tian Shan/Himalayas and through to Japan. An equivalent, the American 3-toed Woodpecker, sometimes treated as a subspecies and sometimes a separate species dorsalis, ranges across Canada and northern USA.

Woodpecker holes in tree
In Eurasia, it is the only woodpecker with black and white with no red and with a yellow cap (and 3 toes). The tree above is peppered with woodpecker-made holes. These photos were taken by Alexandra Makhnina in Kazakhstan.
