The Eurasian 3-toed Woodpecker is native to coniferous forests across Eurasia, mainly in northern areas but also in
the Alps, Carpathians, Tian Shan/Himalayas and through to Japan. An equivalent, the American 3-toed Woodpecker, sometimes treated as a subspecies
and sometimes a separate species dorsalis, ranges across Canada and northern USA.
In Eurasia, it is the only woodpecker with black and white with no red and with a yellow cap (and 3 toes).
