The Greater Antillean Bullfinch, despite its name, is in the tanager family. It is native to subtropical forest
of the Greater Antilles. The breeding male of the several subspecies throughout the islands is dark with bright red eyebrows, throat
and vent patches. The female is brownish grey. (The Puerto Rican Bullfinch is in the same genus but the Lesser Antillean Bullfinch
is in a separate genus.)
The Lesser Antillean Bullfinch, despite its name, is the tanager family not finch. The "Lesser" in its name
refers to its native region of the Lesser Antilles rather than the size of the bird.
Its habitat is tropical/subtropical forest. The breeding male of the several subspecies throughout the
islands is dark with red eyebrows, throat and vent patches (the last two not always visible).
The female is warm brown with russet hightlights. (The Bahamas Bullfinch used to be considered one of the subspecies
but was moved in 2006 to its own full species within the same genus. Both male and female are brown. The Greater Antillean Bullfinch
was moved in 2014 to a separate genus.)
