The Chestnut-tailed Starling, also called the Grey-headed Myna/Mynah, is native to India and Southeast Asia.
The subspecies to which the scientific name was first given is from the Malabar region of India.
It has a white head and is sometimes treated as a full species: the White-headed Mynah
- Sturnia (malabarica) blythii
(above centre and right; a name which can be confusing with the very different White-headed Starling
- Sturnia erythropygia or Sturnus erythropygius).
The chestnut under-tail is not always visible but the white/blue eye and the blue base of the yellow bill are also recognisable features
with the grey back and whitish or light chestnut front.
Hey! Where's my chestnut tail?
The wing-tips are black and the front can be white (above centre) or light pink (above right), as can the head.
The nominal subspecies (not shown) has a greyer head and more chestnut front.
The chestnut tail again - in fact a chestnut under-tail.
