The Red-winged Starling is native to East and South Africa. It has glossy blue-black
plumage with rufous orange wing edges (more visible in flight).
A large starling, the male, above, has dark midnight blue plumage, including his head.
The female, above, has slightly lighter plumage and a grey head and throat.
They will socialise in flocks outside of the breeding season, but breeding pairs are aggressively territorial.
Like many other starlings, they sometimes play the role of oxpeckers.
When catching a hornet, it is careful to remove the sting first, before devouring its prize.
