Streak-backed Oriole Icterus pustulatus

The Streak-backed Oriole is native to Central America and Mexico. It is an occasional vagrant to southwest USA. Despite the name Oriole, like all Western Hemisphere "orioles" it is an icterid not related to the Golden Oriole.

The male (top row) has a strong orange head, front and back, with black and white wings; the female, above centre, is yellow with black and white wings. The photos on this page were taken by Alexandra Makhnina in Costa Rica.

The Streak-backed Oriole's nest is an elaborate and elongated structure hung from branches of trees (and sometimes other, manmade supports).
