The Pied Kingfisher, the only species in its genus, is native to sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia from Turkey
to China with several subspecies over its range. As its name indicates, it is black and white. Males have two dark breast bars
on a white chest and females, as shown, have one breast bar, often broken in the centre. Thanks to Dr Harsha Vardhan Reddy for the
