The Red-crested Finch, also called the Red Pileated Finch, is native to forests of South America
east of the Andes.
Despite the name "finch" and a similar appearance to the firefinches of Africa, it is a tanager
(and has the white lower beak of several tanagers).
The male, shown above, has reddish brown plumage with a red chest and rump, dark wing tips and tail,
white eye ring and bright red crest bordered with black.
The female has plain brown basic plumage with a red rump, pink wash on the chest, dark wingtips and
tail, white eye rings, white chin and no crest.
