The male, shown above, has reddish brown plumage with a red chest and rump, dark wing tips and tail, white eye ring and bright red crest bordered with black.

The female has plain brown basic plumage with a red rump, pink wash on the chest, dark wingtips and tail, white eye rings, white chin and no crest.
