There is some debate whether the African Quailfinch is one or three species. If 3 species, then the one shown
is the Black-faced Quailfinch (Ortygospiza atricollis) of West Africa and others are African or Spectacled (South and East Africa)
and Black-chinned (Central Africa).
All are small, terestrial, gregarious finches of African grasslands with similar dark plumage and
striped sides/breast with a russet belly.
Like quails, they prefer to walk than to fly.
