The Java Finch, also called Java Sparrow and Java Rice Sparrow, comes from Indonesia's islands of Java, Bali and Bawean.
A gregarious bird like a sparrow but with a big, red, finch bill, the Java Finch is
increasingly scarce in Indonesia due to habitat loss and persecution by rice farmers, but it has been
introduced in other countries and is often kept as an aviary bird.
Male and female have similar plumage; juveniles (above right) are dull grey with a pale pink bill.
