The House Finch is native to Mexico, as its scientific name indicates, and also to western USA.
Introduced to eastern USA, it has spread to central areas and southern Canada.
The male (above left/centre) has reddish highlights on his face and upper body, from deep red to orange depending on diet/season;
the female (above right) is plainer.
They eat seeds, grains and berries. The female builds the nest but the male helps feed her and the young.
There is a yellow variant male rather than red.
