Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock Rupicola rupicola

The Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock is native to the north-eastern corner of South America -- more than just the Guianas. An unusual-looking bird, the bright orange male has a 180 degree, orange crest reminiscent of that on a Roman helmet which also covers his beak. He also has hanging ribbons of feathers like the edges of a cowboy jacket. The female is dark brown with a small crest. The Andean Cock-of-the-Rock in the northwest also has a bizarre crest, but a different shape to the Guianan's. The males have a communal lek where a large number will display for the hens to chose a mate. The males do not assist the hens in incubating or raising young.
