The Long-tailed Tit is a most endearing little bird, with its delicate features, pink colouring,
small size with oversized tail and pretty chattering voice. It is not overly shy.
It is native to much of temperate Eurasia with several subspecies. The UK subspecies shown on this page is A. c. rosaceus.
It is said that the sexes have similar plumage, but the male, above left, would often seem to have darker,
bolder markings than the female, above centre.
They say that parrots are the only birds to use their foot as a hand to eat food, but Long-tailed Tits also seem to do this occasionally.
Long-tailed Tits are social birds living harmoniously in family flocks in winter, for warmth when roosting,
and mainly appearing in pairs at other times with occasional other adults or offspring.
They are active in the winter snow.
They are brave enough to eat with parakeets and woodpeckers.
