The male pheasant above was in Kazakhstan and said to be a Japanese (Green) Pheasant,
Phasianus versicolor. While he is obviously not a Japanese
(versicolor) which has a metallic green front and back with blue neck, neither does he seem
to be the Common Pheasant var. tenebrosus , often called a dark or "melanistic" pheasant
(not melanistic either -- little black plumage) which also has mainly green or blue body plumage. He may be a Caucasian Common Pheasant?
The dark hen pheasant above was with the male and also said to be a "Japanese" Pheasant
(P. versicolor). Hen Japanese Pheasants are mottled slightly darker than
typical Common Pheasant hens, but much paler than the above bird. She looks like a typical female Tenebrosus Pheasant
(P. colchicus var. tenebrosus) with dark brown, light-edged feathers and
a purple iridescent gloss around the neck and shoulders.
