Long-eared Owl Almaty Kazakhstan
A juvenile with horizontal rather than vertical chest bars. The "Long Ears" are often laid flat on the head, leading to confusion with the similar Short-eared Owl. In addition to having longer "ears" (tufts of feathers that aren't really the bird's ears) than the Short-eared Owl, the Long-eared has deep orange irises rather than yellow.
Long-eared Owl adult Like most owls, its cryptic colouring blends with tree branches.
