Maran chicken breeds were developed in Marans, France in the 1800s for high quality meat and eggs. An average
layer of some 150-200 brown eggs/year, the quality is said to be the highest. There are several plumage colour varieties. Shown above is the
Speckled Maran.
The Copper-black Maran, also called Black Copper (cockerel above; hen is black with a light brown-streaked neck)
lays dark chocolate-coloured eggs. The fewer eggs laid, the darker the colour. Some also have darker speckles like Dutch Welsummer eggs.
There are several other plumage colour varieties of Maran.
