The Yellowhammer is a species of bunting. The male (shown above) has a bright yellow head, pale yellow front and a typical
bunting or sparrow type brown wings with black streaks. The female (below centre) is duller and streakier.
The name "hammer" is from the German for bunting (- ammer: the Yellowhammer being Goldammer in German).
Its range extends across much of Eurasia and it has also been introduced to New Zealand and Australia.
The paler yellow, streakier plumage of the female is evident in these photos (above) from Alexandra Makhnina,
taken in Kazakhstan - male above left, female above centre and right. Moreover, the eastern subspecies,
E. c. erythrogenys, prevalent in Kazakhstan, is slightly paler than the nominal shown earlier.
